What is LMPC Certificate?

LMPC, full form, Legal Metrology Packaged Commodity is part of the Legal Metrology Act 2009, and Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodity) Rules, 2011.
As per the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodity) Rules, 2011, the importer of pre-packaged commodities requires registration by the Legal Metrology Department.

What is the applicability of LMPC Registration?
Let’s now talk about the products on which LMPC or Legal Metrology Packaged Commodity rules are applied. Simply put, every single product that’s imported, manufactured, and/or packaged comes under the governance of the Legal Metrology department.
However, we can categorize these products into two following categories; both of which come under different provisions of LMPC rules:
- Weights and measuring products
- Non-weights and measuring products
LMPC provisions are applicable on weights and measuring products. They define the rules that dictate the quality and accuracy of these products.
LMPC Provisions are applicable on non-weights and measuring products. They define the declaration the manufacturers, importers and packers have to make on their packaged products.
LMPC certificate means the permission to import, manufacture and pack a certain product. It’s issued by the Legal metrology department only if your product meets all the provisions mentioned in the LMPC rules.
LMPC for non-weights and measuring products
What types of products come under products that are not used for weight or measuring? Everything else. If it’s tangible – you can touch it – it comes under LMPC’s jurisdiction. That’s why in the introduction of this article, we asserted that 99% of products imported, manufacturers have to get LMPC certificate in India.
As per the requirement, the packers and manufacturers are required to put the following information on the product’s package:
- Name of the manufacturer
- MRP of the product
- Year and month of manufacturing / importer
- Ingredient
- Net quantity
- Contact information
- Customer care Email ID
LMPC decides the font, font size, and the dimensions of the display pane in which the manufacturers/importers/packers are supposed to make the above declaration.
Process of obtaining LMPC Certificate in India?
Following is the process to follow to get LMPC certificate in India:
- Reach out to the Legal Metrology Department and get the application form
- Fill the application form and gather copies of the following documents:
- ID proof
- Address proof
- Any business license related to the product
- Manufacturing license
- Import Export Code
- Display Pane sample: You will show where the information you’re going to present on your packages about the packaged product.
- Submit the documents and the application to the Legal Metrology Department
- You’ll obtain LMPC certification after positive analysis of your documents and your application.
