sensual lady in bathing suit relaxing on rocky seashore

For centuries, the vast expanse of the sea, with its churning waves and enigmatic depths, has captivated the Urdu poetic imagination. Samandar, or darya, becomes a canvas for emotions, painted in verses that whisper of longing, beauty, and the endless cycle of life. Two lines often echo on the shore: “Samandar ki gehraiyon mein hai kuchh raaz chhupe, har lehriyaan baatein karti hain khwahish ki, gham ki” (Hidden within the ocean’s depths are secrets, each wave speaks of desire, of sorrow). Moreover, we are going to read a beautiful collection of Urdu Poetry regarding the gehrai of samandar.

Deep Seashores and Silent Rivers in Ghazal

Deep blue sea portrays a beautiful effect on the eyes of poet. The deepness of water inside the sea or even in the river has so much to do with our emotions and feelings. Sometimes, we think that our life is also very deep in its nature. So, by this effect, a new metaphor comes into existence. Also, beyond mere aesthetic depiction, Urdu shayari delves into the emotional resonance of the seashore. Mir Taqi Mir, the master of introspection, finds solace in the vastness: “Tanha darya ke kinare baith ke rote hain hum, yaad aate hain woh log jo hamein chhod ke gaye hain” (Sitting alone on the seashore, we weep, memories surface of those who have left us).

Faiz Ahmed Faiz, however, uses the sea as a metaphor for unrequited love: “Yeh darya ki leher meri tarah bewail karti hai, yeh aasman mere dil ki tarah gham se bhara hai” (This wave of the sea mourns like me, this sky is filled with sorrow like my heart).

This vein of introspective beauty finds contemporary expression in poets like Munir Niazi and Parveen Shakir. In Niazi’s poem “Darya”, the silence speaks volumes: “Darya chup hai, lehrin chup hain, kinara bhi chup hai, bas meri aahat hai jo meri tanhai ko sunaati hai” (The sea is silent, the waves are silent, the shore is silent too, only my footsteps speak of my solitude). Shakir, in her verse “Samandar”, captures the cyclical nature of life: “Har pal badalte rehte hain samandar ke rang, kabhi hoontho pe muskaan toh kabhi aankhon mein aansu” (The colors of the sea change every moment, sometimes a smile on the lips, sometimes tears in the eyes).

Digital Deluge: Instagrammable Oceans in Urdu Verse

In the age of social media, the sea’s allure extends to the digital realm, inspiring a wave of poetic declarations on platforms like Instagram. So, from Mir’s timeless “Chamke chamke chaandni raat, khushiyon ki hai hai bharpoor raat” (Glittering glittering moonlight night, a night overflowing with joy) to modern day verses like “Chandni ki chadar tan pe li hai raat, Eid ki mubarakbad har raftar se aa rahi hai” (The night has donned a cloak of moonlight, Eid’s blessings are approaching with every beat), platforms like Instagram become a stage for celebrating the luminous night. Also, many other Indian and Pakistani poets have watered their pens with immortal couplets about seashores and rivers.

Final Words…

So, whether you’re seeking solace in the ocean’s vastness or sharing its beauty with the world, Urdu poetry offers a timeless companion. In its verses, the waves whisper secrets, the shore echoes with emotions, and the sea becomes a mirror reflecting the depths of our own existence. Samandar ki Gehrai (also known as the deepness of water), is not just limited to its visual, but it is all about our own life.
