RNI registration charges deposited for the title verification form a big part of the total fees when it comes to newspaper registration in India. In this article, we are going to take a brief look into the broad title verification criteria that the RNI has adopted to justify those charges
If you want to start a newspaper in India, you need to obtain the certificate of RNI online. The registration fees for the same is divided into many parts. However, the major part of that fees – the part for which you pay the most – is the title verification.
When it comes to verifying the title of the newspaper, the office of Registrar of newspaper in India has created a confusing list of eligibility criteria. Why confusing? For a simple reason that the points there can be interpreted in many ways. However, the RNI registration fees is only accepted if you’re able to interpret those points in the way the newspaper registration organization wants you to.
Thus, in order to remove any confusion, we are going to provide you with an interpreted version of the eligibility criteria. It’s not subjective to us, but rather the version that will satisfy the newspaper registrar so that you can actually start your own newspaper in India.
Let’s begin.
Similarity to titles is not tolerated in a state or the whole country
If the title of your newspaper is similar to the one in your state or it’s similar to one in the country, you’ll need to come up with a new title. Because without the uniqueness, RNI won’t issue you RNI registration certificate, regardless of whether or not you’ve paid the appropriate newspaper registration fees.
No similarity of title to foreign newspaper is allowed in India
If you think you can just get by copying the title of a foreign newspaper to publish your own, you’re wrong. The RNI keeps a sharp eye on newspapers that are sold all over the globe. However, if you want to bring in that foreign newspaper in India, you can get the RNI registration for it. But that would entail getting authorization from the owner of the said newspaper.
Only three title approval applications can be filed at a time
One applicant is only allowed to file three title approval applications at a time. Yes, you’d need to pay separate newspaper registration fees for it. Additionally, if you try to submit more than three applications, the rest will be rejected, and the RNI registration cost that you’ve deposited for those extra applications will be refunded to you.
Your title verification application will be verified on first come first serve basis
Your application for RNI title verification will be entertained on first come first serve basis. However, there are exceptions to this under the following circumstances:
- You’ve obtained NOC from Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
- You’ve obtained an order from the court
- It’s in the public interest for your newspaper title to be verified.
If your title is rejected due to misspelling, RNI won’t be held responsible
RNI bears no responsibility in case your title verification application gets rejected because of misspelled words.
